“YOU CAN KILL ME, BUT NOT DEFEAT ME!!”

A man who was passionate about his art, volatile in his behaviour, highly refined in his skills, and shamelessly immodest about his abilities – That describes the great actor, Surendranatha Thilakan, who was an unparalleled stalwart in the film industry of my country.

He straddled the words of both arthouse flms and mainstream cinema, with unparalleled commitment and verve. He was also a darling of the masses who challenged majoritarian norms in society. He has bagged many awards & would still live through his characters….

But, the last few years had been extremely stressful for the great actor that perhaps landed him in bad health. His inability to conform to the dubious double-standards of the industry saw him being “banned” from films. Unfazed by the bans, he went back to his first love, theatre, and appeared in more than 80 stages across the state. However, some of the “new generation” directors and actors defied the ban and brought him back to pivotal roles in their films. In fact, there were more in the pipeline when he suffered a stroke and fell unconscious. & it ended up in his death this morning…

The whole day, all channels were dedicated to the stalwart & the whole state was with honour for him…

Those who led wars against him, also joined others with tonnes of praises… Thilakan himself has said, “I know to act only in reels, not in real life”

Hats off to the talented actor & the great individual, who has withdrawn from the reel of life itself!!

    • thanks, vigil…actly, his death & the hardships he had been through ‘coz of the silliness of some stars really inflicted a lot of pain… death is an inevitable reality… stl, the emotional torture & scheming against him, even publicly denying opportunities to such a fine actor.. in our film industry now a type of autocracy is prevailing, where the superstars scheme everything… they forget how they reached there, they were throned only coz of the nobility of the characters they portrayed & the intimacy the ordinary people felt towards those characters… there r many victims, but they didn’t have the nerve or calibre of Thilakan, so they either quit or surrender…

    • definitely not, dear… its his own words, which ebbed out due to the agony he had been through… he was an amazing personality too, who dared to fight all alone for his principles & against the dictating interests, who had all the back up…

  • yes, Rahul…. a great loss. all good things have to have an end… but, some vested interests denied the keralite audience so many gr8 characters which should have been portrayed by the brilliant actor..

  • WISH TO HEAR FROM YOU!!
